That’s why at Safari Family Dental and Orthodontics, we offer customized retainers in Aldine, Gulf Fwy, Richmond and Meyerland that are designed to keep your teeth perfectly secure in their new alignment. Why Should You Wear A Retainer After Orthodontic Treatment

When your orthodontic treatment is complete, your newly aligned teeth may shift back to their original positions. This is because, throughout the treatment, your teeth are constantly being moved by gentle and consistent pressure. Your jawbone goes through changes to adapt accordingly. Once that pressure is gone, there is a natural tendency for teeth to shift back.

This can be a huge setback, especially after committing to the treatment for months or years. For this reason, our dental specialist recommends wearing retainers as they help maintain your new alignment, preventing any relapse. With their consistent use, you can keep showing off your straight, beautiful smile for many more years!

Types of Retainers

Our dental practice provides custom-designed removable and fixed retainers, based on your orthodontic requirements.

Removable Retainers

Clear removable retainers are made of a biocompatible plastic material that is molded to fit securely over your teeth. As the name implies, you can easily remove them before eating food or brushing your teeth. Another type of removable retainer is known as the Hawley retainer, which has a gum-colored base and a metal wire.

Fixed Retainers

Fixed or permanent retainers are bonded to the back of your teeth, typically the lower front teeth. Unlike removable ones, they can only be taken off by a dental professional or orthodontist. For this reason, they are only recommended in cases where there is a high chance of relapse.

How Long Do You Need To Wear Retainers

In the case of a fixed or permanent retainer, you will not need to worry about removing it unless advised by our dentist. However, if you receive removable retainers, our team will guide you to wear them full-time for the first six to nine months.

After this initial period, we may schedule a follow-up appointment to monitor your progress. If your teeth are in perfect alignment, we may suggest wearing your retainers only at night. It prevents the risk of your teeth shifting back to their original positions.
