What Is Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is a safe and effective technique that involves taking a sedative pill at least an hour before undergoing dental treatment. It is ideal for those with moderate dental anxiety and needle phobia. The benefits of this sedative method include:
  • It is completely non-invasive—you only have to take a pill before your appointment
  • No needles are required to numb your teeth
  • It induces a sleep-like state, helping to ease nerves and reduce anxiety
  • You will stay conscious but won’t experience pain or discomfort during treatment
  • It is usually well-tolerated with little to no side effects

How Does Oral Sedation Work

At the time of your initial visit, our dentist will review your dental and medical history to determine whether oral sedation is a suitable option for you. Depending on your age and treatment complexity, we will prescribe a sedative pill that you will have to take an hour before your appointment.

Once it takes effect, you will likely feel drowsy and relaxed, as if in a dream-like state. You will remain conscious and verbally responsive during the procedure, but won’t feel any pain or discomfort. Throughout the treatment, our team will monitor your vital signs, including heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels, to ensure your health and safety.

Recovery After Oral Sedation

Unlike nitrous oxide, the effects of oral sedation last a bit longer. After your procedure, you will need around 20 to 30 minutes to recover before leaving our office. Even though you may feel more alert, it is still not safe to drive yourself home, as the sedative may remain in your body for a few hours.

For this reason, we recommend bringing someone along to your appointment who can drive you back home safely. Once the effect of sedation wears off completely, you can get back to your routine activities.
