Most kids do great with dental care in our office. When a child’s treatment needs, age, health or comfort level make a regular office visit the wrong fit, Safari Family Dental & Orthodontics can plan their care in a hospital setting instead. It always starts with a pediatric dental exam, not an automatic referral, so the plan fits your child.
Hospital dentistry means your child’s dental treatment is done in a hospital or surgical setting rather than in our dental chair. It’s used when the care your child needs can’t be completed safely or comfortably in a routine office visit. Treatment in this setting is usually done under general anesthesia, so your child is asleep and comfortable the whole time.
The dental work itself is the same care we provide in the office. Small cavities can be repaired with fillings, larger areas of decay with crowns that cover and protect the tooth, and deep decay that reaches the nerve may need pulp therapy (a “baby root canal”) to save the tooth. Teeth that can’t be saved may need to be removed. The hospital setting simply lets us complete that care in the safest way for your child, often in a single visit.
We may talk with you about hospital dentistry when a child needs a lot of treatment, is very young, has significant dental anxiety or has a hard time sitting still for care. It can also be the right choice for children with special health care needs, developmental or communication differences, or medical conditions that affect how treatment is planned.
None of these automatically means a child needs the hospital. Our pediatric team looks at two things together: what each tooth needs (how deep the decay goes, how much healthy tooth is left, and how many teeth need care) and what your child needs (age, health history, development, comfort and past dental experiences). Many children are better served in our office with gentle behavior guidance, nitrous oxide or oral sedation, or by spreading treatment over a few shorter visits. We’ll walk you through every option and recommend the hospital only when it’s the best fit.
It starts with a pediatric dental exam, X-rays when needed, and a conversation about your child’s health and history. If hospital dentistry is the best path, our Meyerland office coordinates the hospital visit and gives you clear instructions to follow beforehand, including when your child needs to stop eating and drinking. Some children need a checkup or note from their pediatrician first, and we’ll let you know if that applies.
After treatment, your child rests until they’re awake and ready to go home. It’s normal for them to be sleepy or a little fussy for the rest of the day. Aftercare depends on the treatment completed, so follow the written instructions we give you, offer soft foods if recommended, watch the treated areas, and keep the follow-up visit so we can check healing and help keep your child’s smile healthy going forward.
Hospital dentistry is considered when a child’s treatment needs, age, health, development or comfort level make a regular office visit unsuitable. We recommend it only after a full pediatric dental exam.
Not exactly. Hospital dentistry describes where treatment happens, while general anesthesia describes how your child is kept asleep and comfortable. Hospital dental treatment is usually done under general anesthesia.
No. Special health care needs are one reason, but very young children, children with extensive decay, and children with significant anxiety may also be good candidates. Each child is evaluated individually.
In many cases, yes, which is one of the biggest benefits. The final treatment plan and what we find on the day of treatment determine exactly what is completed.
Hospital dentistry is coordinated through our Meyerland office. Children seen at any of our four offices can be referred there.
Follow-up depends on the treatment completed. We’ll give you written aftercare instructions and schedule a follow-up visit to check healing, restorations and your child’s ongoing preventive care.
Coverage depends on your plan and the reason for treatment. Our team will check your child’s benefits, including Medicaid and CHIP, before scheduling and explain any costs up front.
