If you’ve recently finished orthodontic treatment with braces or Invisalign®, your dentist probably told you to wear a retainer. Retainers help keep your teeth in their new position so they don’t shift back. But how long do retainers actually last?
In this blog, we will cover everything you need to know about how long retainers last. We will explain the differences between removable and fixed retainers, when you should replace them, and tips to help them last longer.
Types of Retainers and Their Lifespans
There are two main types of retainers:
- Removable retainers
- Fixed retainers
Each has a different lifespan and maintenance routine.
1. Removable Retainers
Removable retainers are made from plastic or a combination of plastic and metal wires. They fit precisely over your teeth and are usually worn at night after the initial phase of full-time wear.
How long do removable retainers last?
- Plastic (Essix) retainers
These clear plastic retainers look similar to Invisalign® aligners. With proper care, they can last six months to two years. However, they may wear out faster if exposed to heat or not cleaned regularly. - Hawley retainers
Made of acrylic and metal wires, these are more durable and can last 2 to 5 years or longer with good maintenance.
Here are some signs that indicate it’s time to replace your removable retainers:
- Cracks, bends, or warping
- Loose fit (teeth shifting when worn)
- Discoloration or bad odors that don’t go away with cleaning
2. Fixed (Permanent) Retainers
Fixed retainers consist of a thin wire bonded to the back of your front teeth. They stay in place 24/7 and don’t require removal.
How long do fixed retainers last? Well, with proper care, they can last 5 to 10 years or more. However, the bonding glue can weaken over time, and the wire may break if subjected to excessive force (like biting hard foods).
3. Signs you need a replacement or repair:
- The wire feels loose or detached
- You notice your teeth shifting
- The wire breaks or pokes your tongue
How to Make Your Retainer Last Longer?
No matter which type you have, proper care can extend the lifespan of your retainer.
For Removable Retainers
- Use a soft toothbrush and mild soap (avoid toothpaste, which can scratch plastic)
- Keep them in a case when not in use to avoid damage or loss
- Don’t leave them in hot cars or wash them with hot water, as they can warp
- Remove them before meals to prevent cracks or stains
For Fixed Retainers
- Use a floss threader or water flosser to clean around the wire
- Avoid hard/sticky foods like ice, hard candy, or caramel, as they can damage the wire
- Check regularly, and if you feel any movement or discomfort, see your dentist
The Bottom Line
Retainers play a big role in keeping your smile straight after braces or Invisalign®. While removable retainers typically last six months to five years, fixed retainers can last five to ten years or more. Taking good care of them helps them last longer.
